About Ada

Ada Nield Chew

Ada Nield Chew (1870-1945) was a prominent English suffragette and labour rights
activist. Born in Butt Lane, Kidsgrove, she became known for her outspoken advocacy for
women’s rights and workers’ conditions. Ada’s activism began when she wrote a series of
anonymous letters to a local newspaper detailing the harsh working conditions in the
garment industry, which led to significant improvements. She later became an active
member of the suffragette movement, campaigning tirelessly for women’s right to vote
and broader social reforms. Her legacy continues to inspire contemporary movements
for gender equality and workers’ rights.
